Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya: Buddhist Temple on the Kelani River

Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya is an important Buddhist temple on the banks of the Kelani River, about 10 km east of central Colombo. According to the ancient chronicles, it is one of the sites visited by the Buddha on his third visit to the island. The temple's history is traced back over 2,500 years. It was damaged several times, including during the Portuguese period, and rebuilt each time. The present buildings date from the 18th and 19th centuries.

What to see

Murals: painted by the artist Solias Mendis in the early 20th century. They show events from Buddhist history and the history of Sri Lanka, in soft colours.

Reclining Buddha: a large statue in the image house.

Stonework: a carved stone facade.

Bodhi tree and procession grounds: both are focal points for worshippers.

Chanting by the monks and incense are part of the evening atmosphere.

Duruthu Perahera

The temple holds a procession every January on the Duruthu full moon day. It draws large numbers of worshippers and visitors, with traditional dancers and light displays.

Getting there by car

The temple is 28 km (17.5 miles) from Bandaranaike International Airport. The drive takes 35 to 45 minutes via the Expressway.
