What the daily rate includes, and what you pay extra

The standard rate includes 100 km per day and the vehicle's insurance cover. Fuel, expressway tolls, parking and traffic fines are paid by the hirer. Extra kilometres beyond the daily allowance are charged at the excess rate in your agreement, and some cars have an unlimited-kilometre option: ask for it when you book if you plan a long trip. The explanation of every cost is in car rental costs and the pickup checklist.

Car hire at Colombo airport: your options

Most travellers choose one of four ways to start their trip from the airport. You can mix them: a driver for the first night after a long flight and a self-drive car for the rest of the trip is a common choice.

How the airport pickup works

  • Send your flight number, arrival date, number of passengers and the car you want by WhatsApp or phone (+94 777425008).
  • We confirm the car and track your flight, so a delayed or early arrival is handled and the agent is there when you come out.
  • After immigration and baggage, meet the agent at arrivals using the number in your confirmation.
  • Show your documents, sign the rental agreement and leave the refundable security deposit.
  • Walk around the car with the agent, note any marks and check the fuel level, then drive away.

What you need to collect a self-drive car

The driver must be at least 21 years old and hold a valid driving licence with one to two years of experience. Foreign nationals need a valid International Driving Permit or a temporary endorsement from the Automobile Association of Ceylon (AAC). The rules for visitors have changed in recent years, so check the current steps before you fly; our guide to driving licence rules for tourists explains them.

  • Passport with a valid visa or ETA
  • Home driving licence and the International Driving Permit or local permit
  • A card or cash for the rental and the security deposit
  • Your booking confirmation

From the airport to your first night

After a long flight, do not plan a long drive on the first night. Negombo (about 10 km, 20-30 minutes) and Colombo (about 35 km, 45-60 minutes) are the easy options. Galle takes about 2.5 hours by expressway, Kandy 3.5 to 4.5 hours and Sigiriya about 4.5 hours. If you want to go further on the first day, a car with a driver is safer. Read how to rent a car at Colombo airport and Colombo airport to Kandy by rental car for the routes.

Returning the car at the airport

Plan to return the car at least three hours before your flight. Refuel to the level shown in your agreement, allow time for the return inspection and ask for the deposit refund to be confirmed. If your flight leaves in the middle of the night, tell us in advance so that someone is there to receive the car. If you start at the airport and end in another city, ask about one-way rentals when you book.
