Rumassala Sanctuary
Rumassala Sanctuary: A Forest Hill Above Galle Harbour
Rumassala Sanctuary is a protected coastal forest on the prominent hill above Galle harbour. It is of interest to botanists, geologists and anyone curious about Sri Lankan legends linked to the hill.
Plants and birds
The vegetation differs from the surrounding coastal areas. Several endemic plant species grow here, and many are used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine. Bird watchers can expect various flycatchers and barbets. As in any tropical forest, snakes are present but rarely seen. Stay on the marked paths.
Walking trails
Several paths wind through the sanctuary. They lead to the Japanese Peace Pagoda, Jungle Beach and several old Buddhist temples. Through gaps in the canopy there are views of the ocean. The paths can be steep, so wear sturdy walking shoes. There is no formal museum, but the religious sites on the hill often display historical information. Local nature guides can be hired to explain the medicinal plants and the legends of the hill.
Getting there by car
The sanctuary is 5 km from Galle Fort and 158 km from the airport, about 2 hours 30 minutes by road. A rental car can take you to the upper parts of the hill, and you explore on foot from there: see [rent a car in Sri Lanka](/rent-a-car-sri-lanka).
